Authentic Salsa
November 1, 2011You should just start calling me Chef Lauren! Haha, just kidding and not even close BUT I did master homemade salsa on Sunday afternoon. I had seen the recipe here and it looked pretty simple and I love me some salsa, so I figured I’d give it a try. I would eat Mexican 5 times a week if possible, that’s how much I love it. There are actually some weeks that we eat it 2 or 3 times…guess it’s good I run so much 🙂
To start you need:
4 tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic
2 red jalapenos (I used 1 b/c I’m not a huge fan of hot stuff)
Sea salt
We made a quick trip to the store on Sunday after my run to grab what we needed. After Tom explained to me that yes, you can buy fresh jalapenos and they don’t just come in cans (I still need his guidance) I was set! We luckily already have a molcajete because Tom makes some awesome guacamole.
To start you boil the tomatoes and jalapenos until the skin is so soft you can push a fork through without a problem.
While they are boiling you can mash the garlic in the molcajete. I also added onions because I love them. So I just chopped them up in tiny pieces. I know adding different stuff to the recipe, I’m pretty big time.
Mash the garlic. Then add the jalapeno (s) without the stem.
I had to incorporate some “man” strength to crush the jalapeno. It was the only thing Tom helped with 🙂
Then add the tomatoes one by one without the skin. We ended up only using three because it was going to spill over the top. I then added the onions, some sea salt, stirred it around and BAM…. Lauren’s Homemade Salsa. Next time I’ll add more garlic and sea salt but it rocked.
It was the perfect dish to eat while watching the Lions win…yet again this season. I know it’s almost as shocking as me cooking.
What did Tom think you ask?!
And I quote, “I think this is the best salsa I’ve ever had!”
He is a good husband 🙂
